LOU 2022: Netflix Review
LOU (2022), a new survival thriller on Netflix, stars Allison Janney, Jurnee Smollett, and Logan Marshall-Green. Great suspense, fast-paced action, and shockingly realistic consequences. You should definitely watch this. Read our complete Lou film review here!
LOU (2022) is a new Netflix survival thriller with elements of action, crime, and (of course) drama. The plot is fairly straightforward, though there is a mystery that you will witness unravel. Also, we start in one place, travel back a few hours, and then return to the beginning.
You might get confused if you look at your phone while the movie is starting (which you should never do!). Allison Janney, Jurnee Smollett, and Logan Marshall-Green play the three pivotal lead roles in this Netflix film.
Allison Janney is excellent as Lou.
Allison Janney has long been a favorite of mine (The West Wing, The Girl on the Train). I've loved her style since the first time I saw her in anything, so I'm always happy to watch anything with her in the cast. She plays the title character, Lou, in this Netflix film.
While Allison Janney has played some tough and sassy women in the past, Lou is right up there with Sarah Connor from Terminator. She is well-trained and ruthless. And I absolutely adore it!
Jurnee Smollett continues to astound.
Jurnee Smollett, who co-stars with Allison Janney, is one of my newer favorites. So far, she hasn't done anything wrong in anything I've seen her in. Jurnee Smollett has done it all, from playing Black Canary in Birds of Prey to starring in the HBO series Lovecraft Country. She was even good in True Blood, despite the fact that I disliked the storyline.
Lou is no exception to Jurnee Smollett's incredible journey!
What I admire most about Jurnee Smollett in Lou and everything else she's done is her ability to convey both strength and emotion. That is, she is constantly demonstrating that you can be strong and capable without becoming cold. You can love and be hurt while still fighting.
That's true and significant, especially in a survival story like this!
Lou has a young daughter, Vee, who is also played brilliantly by Ridley Asha Bateman. Children can be hit or miss, but young Ridley Asha Bateman is undeniably a hit!
Logan Marshall-Green never disappoints.
To be honest, I feel very spoiled by the cast of Lou because the core cast consists of three actors I adore. Logan Marshall-Green, who is a chameleon, is introduced after Allison Janney and Jurnee Smollett.
He has the ability to play both the charming good guy and the sadistic bad guy. Sometimes it's a little of both.
Logan Marshall-Green has played intriguing and fascinating characters in films ranging from Prometheus to The Invitation to Leigh Whannell's 2018 sci-fi action thriller Upgrade. Lou is unquestionably not a good guy.
To keep things grounded, we do get some backstory. Not to justify his behavior, but to better understand what shaped him into the man he is today.
Now you can watch Lou on Netflix!
Anna Foerster (Underworld: Blood Wars, Westworld) directs LOU and does an excellent job. From the visual style to the pacing, this is a thriller that I thoroughly enjoy. I was concerned that the running time of 1 hour and 47 minutes would be too long. It's not. Not even remotely!
Maggie Cohn and Jack Stanley wrote the screenplay, which is based on her story. Maggie Cohn's first feature film screenplay follows her work on The Staircase, Narcos: México, and American Crime Story. This is Jack Stanley's first published work.
LOU is packed with suspense, mystery, and brutal action sequences, as well as a realistic backstory reminiscent of some true-crime documentaries. You should definitely watch this on Netflix!
